A Momma Bird and her egg
A girl in my ward/friend of mine is having a baby
a baby girl to be exact
They are so talented in their own ways and I was so excited to do something side by side with them.
This shower had to be perfect, just like the little baby that is about to be born
So with our color palette and theme, we went for it.
One of my favorite things that I contributed to the shower was the favor for everyone when the shower was done, I knew exactly what I wanted to do.
Sugar cookies.
And since I am somewhat new to the whole sugar cookie thing, I knew exactly what blog to go to....
Not only do I love to look at all her goodies, but I love that she has so many tutorials on how to make the perfect cookie!
Obviously I have lots of work to do, but I had so much fun doing this and what a perfect occasion to do it for! I can't wait to do it again!
**finished project down below**
First off, I couldn't find the perfect bird cookie cutter that I wanted, so I made my own with the help of some googling and youtubing and some imagination...
Step 1: Take a Lasagna pan and cut out the bottom (sides are sharp so be VERY careful)
Cut into 3 inch wide (or so, I didn't measure) strips
Step 2: Fold long edges down with a ruler or something else with a straight edge making sure it is straight (or straight enough)
and the other side
Step 3: Take a rolling pin (like my heavy duty one? that thing will break your foot if it fell off the counter!) and roll the strip flat
Step 4: Trace what you are wanting on a piece of paper and use it as your guide, use anything that will help to get the shape you are wanting, and be patient
If the strip is not long enough, add another strip by slipping it into the folded edges of the one your are working on.
Slip in the last edge and pinch the edges tight....it wont take much.
Tada!
These cookie cutters will not hold up long term...but for a project like this, it was perfect!
Next up was the tutorials from Bake at 350
I followed her recipe (which is really really good and easy)
And her advice on how to make the cookies keep shape (Put in freezer for 5-10 minutes)
And I studied her posts on how to make the royal icing for the cookies and with the help of Haley and Lindsay, they turned out so cute!
I think they turned out pretty well for my first time!
The scenery
The spread of yummy food!
Strawberry whip cream eclairs, cucumber sandwiches, lemon bars, candy, coconut cupcakes....plus a whole lot more!! It was a belly full of good food!!
PS: Making the cookie cutters would be a great family home evening idea! I am going to let Gabe and Nolan draw a picture of what they would like and James and I will help them make it into a cookie cutter so we can make special shaped cookies, and then of course...decorate them and eat them :)
